Hardware RSS FeedsD-Link Xtreme N Duo Media Router DIR-855 - wireless router - The D-Link Xtreme N Duo Media Router DIR-855 is a stable performer with excellent Web interface. But because it comes in a bulky, old-school design, has a relatively short range, and carries a hefty price tag, consider waiting for the price to drop before investing in this router....Feed Source: reviews.cnet.com Dell Studio S1535-125B - The Dell Studio S1535-125B impresses us with its leading performance in the sub-$1,000 category, thanks in large part to a speedy Intel CPU and generous memory allotment. Striking a fine balance between Dell's XPS and Inspiron lines, we recommend this well-rounded 15-inch laptop for students and home users alike.... HP Pavilion dv2945se - The 14-inch HP Pavilion dv2700t Special Edition looks like a much more expensive laptop, but you can also find a more powerful 14-inch laptop with better battery life for less money.... Apple iMac (20-inch, 2.4GHz) - Apple's smaller-scale iMac remains our favorite all-in-one. And while its looks, its ease of use, and its performance are all selling points, Windows PCs are starting to catch up (at least with the latter). A few components could also stand an update, but in general you'll find the 20-inch iMac a remarkable computer for its price.... Dell Inspiron 1420 - The basic 14-inch Inspiron 1420 is a reasonable choice for budget buyers who want something a little smaller than the standard 15-inch chassis, but this laptop has missed out on recent updates other Inspiron models have received.... Dell Studio Hybrid - If you're considering all of the computers in the $700 to $1,000 price range, the Dell Studio Hybrid is not very compelling. However, if you limit yourself to the very specific niche of small PCs, you'll appreciate this system's clever design and its relatively powerful hardware.... HP Pavilion dv2915nr - The HP Pavilion dv2915nr is an attractive and affordable 14.1-inch laptop that will serve your needs through four years of study. The disappointing battery life gives us pause, however, on this otherwise well-rounded laptop.... Dell Inspiron 1525 - Adding some features missing from its 14-inch cousin, the Dell Inspiron 1525 is the textbook example of a midsize, mainstream laptop--a basic workhorse with few surprises. It may be a bit large for daily campus travel, but it should last you the full four years.... ZT Affinity 7225Xi-35 - ZT's Affinity 7225Xi-35 is a cleanly built midrange PC that will get you through all of your everyday tasks with ease. It's not a particularly flashy desktop, and you may be able to find more aggressively configured PCs for the same price, but if you need an affordable workhorse, this system will do the job.... Sony Vaio VGN-FW140E/H - Sony's smart design, long battery life, and a big 16-inch screen, make the Vaio FW140--the first Centrino 2 laptop we've seen--an excellent, but still portable, media hub.... Brother MFC 7440N - The Brother MFC-7440N prints quickly and is fairly inexpensive to sustain, but we simply can't get behind a printer with poor quality graphics, significant hardware defects, and a boring design.... Acer Aspire One (XP Home, White) - The Acer Aspire One is easily the best of the current under-$400 Netbooks, but its meager allotment of memory and tiny battery limit its appeal.... Toshiba Satellite L305-S5875 - There is nothing inherently wrong with the entry-level Toshiba Satellite L305, but both Dell and Sony have 15-inch budget laptops that offer more for less.... HP Pavilion dv7-1025nr - We recommend the eye-catching, media-friendly HP Pavilion dv7-1025nr desktop replacement for students who want a laptop that doubles as an entertainment center. Gateway, however, has a slightly cheaper 17-inch model that's better suited to gamers.... Sony Vaio NR430E/L - The entry-level Sony Vaio NR430 strikes all the right notes--decent performance, pleasing design, great keyboard and display--to form an excellent 15-inch laptop for students (and home users in general) on tight budgets.... Dell Inspiron 518 - Dell's Inspiron 518 is the latest in a long line of utilitarian, midrange Windows PCs. We wish Dell offered a bit more flexibility with its configuration, as well as a 64-bit Windows option, but for a straightforward PC, this is one of the more powerful systems for the dollar.... HP Pavilion dv5-1002nr - The HP Pavilion dv5-1002nr's good looks, useful feature set, and current discount price may allow you to overlook its middling performance, but its dreadful battery life might be the deal breaker.... HP Compaq CQ50-115NR - The entry-level Compaq Presario CQ50-115NR looks great, but you can get better performance and battery life for your money.... Kodak ESP 5 All-in-One - multifunction (color) - The Kodak ESP5 is an attractive full color all-in-one printer, scanner, and copier, and casual photo enthusiasts will be happy with the watered-down editing software, but hard-core users should look elsewhere for a multifunction printer. The ESP5 is too expensive and suffers from too many mechanical deficiencies for us to give it our CNET stamp of approval.... Toshiba Satellite A305-S6858 - The Toshiba Satellite A305-S6858 is a very good mainstream machine, but we prefer one of its competitors.... HP Pavilion dv5-1004nr - At its current discounted price, we'd be willing to overlook the HP Pavilion dv5-1004nr's below average performance if the battery life wasn't so bad.... Toshiba Satellite U405D-S2852 - Toshiba's thin-and-light Satellite U405 is a sleek and affordable alternative to the 13-inch MacBook, but this 13-inch laptop trails the pack in both performance and battery life.... Sony Vaio VGN-CR510E (pink) - Though it doesn't stand out in any one area, the Sony Vaio CR510E covers all the bases--decent performance, long battery life, good size, affordable price--in forming a good bet as a back-to-school laptop.... Gateway DX4200-UB001A - We can forgive Gateway for cramming the DX4200 with more memory than it needs simply because its specs and overall performance are the best in its price class. Of the various do-it-all lower midrange PCs out there, this one gets our nod.... Asus Eee PC 901 (white, Windows XP) - The long-awaited Asus Eee PC 901 is the best version of this inexpensive Netbook yet, but it's facing increased competition from the likes of HP, Dell, and MSI.... National Ethernet versus Legacy Frame Relay/ATM - If your wide area network is constructed using Frame Relay or ATM technologies, National Ethernet from THUS is a leading next-generation networking service that can offer cost savings and many service related benefits relative to your current networking. No matter whether your business is looking to reduce ICT costs and improve ROI, requires more bandwidth for a similar ongoing cost to your existing networking, wishes to gain access to multiple services delivered cost effectively down a single pipe into sites or even if your business is quite happy with its current networking, we recommend that you take a few minutes to read this paper as National Ethernet really does offer a viable alternative.... Cable Sharing in Commercial Building Environments: Reducing Cost, Simplifying Cable Management, and Converging Applications onto Twisted-Pair Media - This white paper introduces the topic of cabling sharing to telecommunications professionals responsible for enterprise networks. Cable sharing describes the practice of running more than one application over different pairs of a twisted-pair copper telecommunications channel thereby reducing costs, simplifying cable management, and converging applications onto one media type in commercial building environments. The growing market acceptance of fully-shielded (i.e. "category 7" or "class F") cabling systems has been identified as the primary reason why cable sharing techniques are appearing in the designs of the industry's top IT infrastructure designers and consultants. Cable sharing meets the increasing demand for high-density, low-speed application support as more and more equipment devices support IP protocol, Ethernet communication, and operation over twisted-pair cabling.... New Architectures and Technologies for Software-Defined Radio Base Stations - Wireless communication standards are evolving very fast. Operators and system suppliers do not have the same philosophies when it comes to delivering the multitude of different mobile communication standards (UMTS FDD, HSDPA, HSUPA, WiMAX).

To allow the operators of the infrastructure to reuse their existing sites, Alcatel is in the process of merging the different air-interface standards into a single base station architecture, based on Alcatel's Node B, using a software-defined radio approach. As a result, a single hardware solution will provide highly flexible usage of multiple frequency bands and multiple standards at the same time.

Suitable Multi-Standard/Multi-Band approaches and architectures are being researched at Alcatel R&I Stuttgart. A first laboratory prototype for a Multi-Band Transceiver is available today and demonstrates the technical feasibility.... The Business Benefits of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) - Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is still a work-in-progress, but it's beginning to bear fruit in small, controlled environments.

SIP offers the promise of supporting a wide range of services beyond basic telephony, including instant messaging, presence management, and voice-enabled, web-based e-commerce. It can enable powerful enterprise applications that reduce cost, improve user productivity, and strengthen customer interactions.

Over time, SIP services will expand and enhance existing business processes and procedures, becoming an extension of the way in which we work today.... AT&T's Four Points of Convergence - Navigating Your Transition to Services over IP: Driving for Enhanced Productivity and Stronger Returns - Internet protocol (IP) is the unifying technology that has made possible today's extraordinary level of convergence and interoperability among communications systems, applications and devices. By using IP and industry standards you can simplify the job of providing a range of IP-based services across multiple access methods and devices. This paper provides a quick how-to.
