I love Project Runway too. I get inspiration from things I see in movies and TV and try to make something similar. Years ago I made fabric roses to adorn the neck of a little black dress. I got the idea from a dress Anne worn in the Anne of Green Gables sequel.... this book rocks, it is a classic and provides excellent instructions! See if your library has it!... Re: shredding clothes - found a tip - of course you know that now we want to see a picture of the dress ... Re: fabric details - embellishments & manipulating - I have found my library to be a HUGE resource for books on techniques, etc. If they don't have a particular book I'm looking for, they will get it send in - all for free. Just peruse sections starting with
391 - costume
646 - sewing, personal grooming
745 - crafts
and I always look first in the just arrived section
Hope that helps - Tiffany... fabric details - embellishments & manipulating - embellishments & manipulating fabric
I'm just getting back into sewing and would love some ideas to be more creative & crafty.
When I watch Project Runway or see items in the stores, it looks as if they've manipulated the fabric to make the garment more interesting fabric weaving, flowers, or added embellishments using ribbons.. etc. to customize the piece.
I'd love to hear what others have done and any book suggestions to get some inspiration from.
If you cut fabric to weave it - i am guessing that the edges need to be finised before you weave it.. basic questions I am not sure of. The prior thread on costume gems by Gwen had me thinking that it's those details that make a garment.
Any info or recommendations you have are appreciated
Thanks... Re: stenciling fabric techniques?? - Just reserved it from my local library.... Re: stenciling fabric techniques?? - I just got a great book called "Lotta Prints" by Lotta Jansdotter. Take a look and see if your library has it.... Re: stenciling fabric techniques?? - Forgot to mention - freezer paper is CHEAP!... Re: stenciling fabric techniques?? - I am thinking of stenciling ivy around my brick fireplace kind of arching outward at the top I think it would be very pretty.... Re: Costume gems - Thanks everyone!... Re: going to the spa - maybe some cute hair protector
I just went to Olympus spa in Seattle area. The hair caps are utilitarian not cute at all.... Re: stenciling fabric techniques?? - <I've been so tempted to do my new living room in Ivy, but i fear it may have gone out of style. >
Personally, I love ivy - just can't seem to keep it alive! So long as you're not planning on selling any time soon, why not do what pleases you. That is what art is about. I know some things seem dated in decorating, but if anyone says anything, you could just say you decided to go retro, but without going too far back. ;-)
I've seen an amazing thing done on just one wall (you could do a small low wall if you have one) where they did a stone look affect (think castle wall) and then did ivy over it. When it looks more like a mural than stenciling, time has a little less effect on it - at least that's my two cents worth.... shredding clothes - found a tip - So I wanted to shred a gown for a silly little theme event this weekend. I've done it with knifes and razors but never really got the perfect effect I wanted. Well a friend of mine gave me a pack of those eyebrow razors because I had a last minute event and didn't do the girly thing
I took one of the eyebrow razors and slashed away. It wasn't perfect but it was damn close to looking the way I wanted the shredded dress to look. It torn apart the thread and fabric leaving a trail of along the cuts. Really cool effect. I'm wearing it Sat so I'll post a picture next week.... Re: What can you do with a pattern? (X-Posted) - even this group has a HUGE thread on copyright, not just legality but nuance of morality etc. I read it some not too awful long ago, you might glean a lot of info from that thread, but remember to directly quote those who posted, hehe. sorry could not resist that one.
